Westminster Abbey Events: Easter, Lates, Talks and Tours
Updated October 27, 2026
Short answer: beyond daily sightseeing, Westminster Abbey runs a full calendar of events. The main ones are the Easter services, evening concerts and occasional “Lates”, free talks from the Westminster Abbey Institute, free Sunday organ recitals, and special tours on set dates. Everything is listed on the Abbey’s events page, filtered by type.
Easter and the church year
Easter is the biggest event of the Abbey’s year, and its services are free. On Easter Day 2026 (5 April) the Abbey’s listings showed:
- 8:00am Holy Communion from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, said rather than sung, lasting about 40 minutes.
- 10:30am Sung Eucharist, the principal Easter service, sung by the Choir of Westminster Abbey. No booking was required.
- 3:00pm Choral Evensong.
- 6:00pm Sung Eucharist in St Margaret’s Church next door.
The night before, the Vigil and First Eucharist of Easter began at 8:00pm, in the dark. Easter Day is a Sunday, so the Abbey is open for worship only, not sightseeing. The same pattern applies through the church year: Christmas, Holy Week and feast days have their own services. Our Westminster Abbey at Christmas page covers December.
Times change each year. Check the Abbey’s Holy Week and Easter listing before you plan around a service.
Evening openings and late visits
The Abbey closes to sightseers in the afternoon, with last weekday admission at 3:30pm. To be inside after dark, you go to an event. There are four ways in:
- Lates. The Abbey runs occasional evening openings it calls Lates. The listing on 27 October 2026 showed a Late in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries on Thursday 5 November 2026, 6:30pm to 8:30pm, for £11.55 including a £1.55 booking fee.
- Concerts. Ticketed choral concerts take place in the Abbey. The autumn 2026 listing included Handel’s Messiah on Friday 27 November (7:00pm, £17.28 to £65.34) and Christmas with the Choir of Westminster Abbey on Saturday 19 December (7:00pm, from £17.28, limited seats left).
- Evensong. Choral Evensong is free, usually at 5:00pm on weekdays except Wednesday, when it is said Evening Prayer without the choir. Times change, so check the Abbey’s service listing for your day; see our Evensong guide.
- Organ recitals. A free 30-minute recital on the grand organ every Sunday afternoon.
St Margaret’s Church also hosts lunchtime concerts, such as a Purcell programme on 18 November 2026, priced £0 to £10.

The Abbey hosts talks and lectures, and runs special tours you cannot get on a normal visit. On 27 October 2026 the events page listed:

The Abbey also names three lecture series, the Eric Symes Abbott, Koinonia and Charles Gore lectures, and runs family events such as the “Souls, saints and stories” tour, which had sold out for 26 to 30 October 2026. Tickets for the Abbey unlocked tours are released on set dates.
If no special tour fits your dates, the Abbey’s verger-led tours run Monday to Saturday for the entry price plus £10, booked on arrival. Or book a guided tour of Westminster Abbey in advance, from $100, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
